Heritage New Zealand, Russell

Just sketching…..

Currently the home of Russell’s policeman, this historic house designed in the 1860s functioned as a Custom House until the 1890’s. The huge elaborately twisted Morton Bay Fig Tree is said to have been planted by the first customs collector in the late 1800s. Pompallier Mission, a pioneer printery & tannery, was established by French Marist missionaries, to print & bind religious texts translated into Maori. The historic building is an example of French rammed-earth architecture.

The loud call of Russell’s weka is heard repeatedly at dawn & dusk, but the weka population is under threat by feral & domestic cats in the area. Click on Weka Song to hear the sound of this NZ native bird (NZ Dept of Conservation website).
