Heritage New Zealand, Russell

Just sketching…..

Currently the home of Russell’s policeman, this historic house designed in the 1860s functioned as a Custom House until the 1890’s. The huge elaborately twisted Morton Bay Fig Tree is said to have been planted by the first customs collector in the late 1800s. Take this link, for stories about historic Russell, Kororareka, the ‘Hell-hole of the Pacific’

Pompallier Mission, a pioneer printery & tannery, was established by French Marist missionaries, to print & bind religious texts translated into Maori. The historic building is an example of French rammed-earth architecture.

The loud call of Russell’s weka is heard repeatedly at dawn & dusk, but the weka population is under threat by feral & domestic cats in the area. Click on Weka Song to hear the sound of this NZ native bird (NZ Dept of Conservation website).
